WHY YOU WILL LOVE THIS RECIPE
I figured it out! I finally did!
The blend of spices that makes Taco Bell nacho fries what they are.
And oh my goodness, I can’t wait for you to try these fries. I just know you’ll love them.
Maybe you won’t even want to have the regular Taco Bell nacho fries again after trying my version.
They make the perfect snack, side or maybe even main meal 😉.
Imagine french fries fried to crispy golden brown perfection and then tossed in the most delicious seasoning blend, a little garlicky, oniony, sweet, zesty, spicy…
And served with a rich creamy nacho cheese sauce!
Everything tastes absolutely delicious and will make you so happy whether you’ve tried Taco Bell’s nacho fries before or not. And omg if you are a fan of those nacho fries (one of the best fast food fries ever!), I can’t wait for you to try these!
Those seasoned crispy fries taste incredible but hey, here are a few more reasons why you’ll love this recipe:
- You won’t have to be dependent on Taco Bell anymore 💃🏻! Taco Bell makes their nacho fries available only for a limited period of time every couple of months and it sucks when you’re craving them and can’t find them anywhere on the Taco Bell menu! With this copycat Taco Bell french fries, you can have some gorgeously seasoned fresh fries whenever you crave them!
- I’ve had moments where my fries haven’t been very fresh or are not seasoned as much as I would like them when I buy them! With this nacho fries recipe, you can make some freshly cooked french fries fresh and season them as much as you like ❤.
- And oh boy, the best part? This is a super easy recipe. This simple recipe is ready so quick so the moment you crave those fries, you’ll get them in under half an hour. Just fry those french fries, make your seasoning and your cheese sauce and you’re done. It all takes less than 30 minutes!
- And I’ve made sure to use easy to find ingredients. To try and get that delicious flavor, I needed to add some extra ingredients but it makes everything worth it. You’ll get those ingredients at your local grocery store or an online store.
- Oh and this copycat Taco Bell nacho fries recipe makes the perfect snack for parties too (it’s the ultimate game-day snack!) thanks to it being delicious and easy to make. Everyone will be munching on it and loving it!

To make the french fries:
- Frozen french fries- I thought I’ll post a recipe but I didn’t want to make things super complex for you! If you prefer making your own french fries at home, you can do that. I’ve used my favorite regular frozen fries here. Go ahead and use straight cut fries that you know and love!
- Vegetable oil- The best oil to use here would be a neutral cooking oil with a high smoke point. Some options are peanut oil, canola oil, vegetable oil or sunflower oil.
The nacho fries seasoning blend ingredients:
- Cheddar cheese powder- A touch of cheddar cheese powder adds a hint of cheese flavor to our fry seasoning. I can call this one of the secret ingredients in this seasoning blend! Cheddar cheese popcorn seasoning works here too.
- Sugar– Sugar is another secret ingredient here! When you bite into a Taco Bell nacho fry, you’ll taste a hint of sweetness. There’s no surprise why either! When there’s a chili powder based seasoning blend, sugar adds a hint of sweetness to it balancing everything together. Yum!
- Lemon pepper seasoning– And another secret ingredient. When you taste a Taco Bell fry, you also taste a zing… A zesty flavor! I’ve used lemon pepper powder here to get a flavor close to that. You can use Tajin seasoning or lemon chili powder too!
- Ground cumin– A spice that’s regularly used in taco seasoning! Goes super well here with its warm, citrusy, earthy flavors.
- Ground coriander– Just a little ground coriander adds a nutty citrusy flavor which works pretty well with this seasoning.
- Paprika– That deep peppery earthy flavor of sweet paprika works wonders in this fry seasoning. Plus it adds that gorgeous flame red color to our seasoning blend as well. This paprika is also called sweet paprika.
- Garlic powder– An essential here! Garlic powder is delicious and oh my goodness, those garlicky flavors in this seasoning blend are everything!
- Onion powder– Onion powder is just as important as garlic powder here. That onion-y goodness tastes incredible in this Taco Bell nacho fries seasoning.
- Cayenne pepper– A very important chili powder to use. Cayenne pepper adds that smoky heat to our Taco Bell fries seasoning. Pretty essential! You can use red chili pepper flakes as well.
- Salt and black pepper– Seasoning essentials!
- Dried oregano– I absolutely love this herb here. It adds that right amount of herbiness without being too much.
Hey, you can also just use cheddar cheese powder, sugar, lemon pepper seasoning and taco seasoning (the taco seasoning here can help you skip out on ground cumin, ground coriander, regular/sweet paprika, garlic powder, onion powder and cayenne pepper, as it usually has these ingredients already present in the mix!).
The nacho cheese sauce ingredients:
(You can also skip out on making this nacho cheese sauce and use your favorite store-bought nacho cheese sauce if you prefer but hey, fresh homemade cheese sauce is ALWAYS better 😉!)
- Heavy cream– Melty sharp cheddar cheese in warm heavy cream is everything. Heavy cream is the perfect base for our cheddar cheese to melt in making everything thick, smooth and deliciously rich.
- Whole milk– A little whole milk helps add some liquid to our nacho sauce so it doesn’t thicken up too much.
- Cornstarch– Helps with thickening the sauce up a little.
- Cayenne pepper– For a touch of heat in our nacho cheese sauce.
- Sharp cheddar cheese- That deep rich flavor of cheddar cheese is perfect in our nacho sauce. It pairs really well with our copycat nacho fries too. You can use Colby-Jack cheese or American cheese too here.
- Pickled jalapeno juice– That sour flavorful juice adds that characteristic flavor to our nacho cheese sauce.
- Cheddar cheese powder (optional)– To add an extra touch of cheese to our nacho sauce!
- Salt– A seasoning essential in this simple recipe. You can adjust this according to your personal consumption or preference.

HOW TO MAKE THIS TACO BELL NACHO FRIES RECIPE [Step-by-Step Instructions with Photos]
Please keep in mind that I go into lots of detail in all my recipes so you get to know all the super important tips and tricks when it comes to making a particular recipe. I always want you to make the BEST of whatever you’re cooking ❤.
STEP 1: MAKE THE NACHO FRIES SEASONING BLEND
This is a pretty easy recipe and we don’t need to do much.
Add all the nacho fry seasoning ingredients to a small bowl and give it a good mix.
Now, I prefer to mix the ingredients even better with the help of a blender or food processor. Just a few pulses and all those spices will mix really well with each other. I feel all that flavor comes out better too but this is an optional step and you can skip out on it if you like.
Set your spice mix aside in a small bowl and move forward!
STEP 2: MAKE THE NACHO CHEESE SAUCE
Get your cheese sauce ingredients ready!
Take a skillet or small saucepan over medium heat.
Pour in the heavy cream and whole milk.
Use a whisk or spatula to stir around for a minute or two.
Once the mixture becomes a little warm, not too hot, reduce the heat from medium heat to low heat…
And add in the cayenne pepper and cornstarch as well as the shredded cheese in batches while stirring/whisking the mixture.
Keep stirring over low heat until it thickens up just a little for about 4 to 5 minutes. The cheese may look clumpy in the beginning but it will melt the more you stir/whisk the mixture.
It’s okay if it bubbles just a little but don’t let the cheese sauce come to a boil. Please don’t let it cook for more than 5 minutes. It’s okay if your sauce looks thin after 4 to 5 minutes are up, it’ll thicken up as it cools down. Overcooking the cheese sauce may make it gritty!
Once 4 to 5 minutes are up, switch off the heat. Add in the jalapeno juice and cheddar powder.
Stir well!
Taste and see if it needs salt, you can add in some regular or kosher salt according to your personal consumption or preference, and mix.
STEP 3: FRY THOSE FRIES!
We’re almost done with this Taco Bell nacho fries copycat recipe!
Fry your french fries in hot oil according to package instructions until they’re deliciously golden brown!
If you have too many french fries, fry them in batches.
If you’re frying your french fries in batches like me, here’s what I do…
Go ahead and first strain that first batch of golden brown crispy fries with the help of a strainer or slotted spoon.
Add the crispy fries to a large bowl and add half the amount of seasoning you want to add. Always start small because you probably won’t know how much you prefer!
I add a total of about 5 to 6 teaspoons to ALL my french fries. This means I add about 3 teaspoons of seasoning to the first batch of fries. You can add a lesser amount of seasoning to be more comfortable with the flavor the first time.
Cover and mix well. Lift the lid off after mixing.
Then fry the next batch of french fries, add them to your first batch in the large bowl and add as much seasoning as you prefer (I add the rest 3 teaspoons here) cover and give everything a good mix!
Try a fry and see if you want more seasoning. You can add more if you prefer.
Why do I emphasize on adding the seasoning to your first batch rather than waiting for your second batch to fry and adding all the seasoning at once? That’s because when the french fries are fresh out of hot oil, they absorb all that seasoning so much better ❤!!! Please don’t skip out on this.
Anyway… You may have some seasoning left over depending on how much you’ve used. You can make some more fries or use it to season another dish!
Serve hot and seasoned with some delicious nacho cheese sauce on the side!
Give it a taste… Isn’t that absolutely incredible ❤? You did a fantastic job!

- Please always use fresh ingredients when making this recipe. We often feel powders don’t go bad but they can and do.
- Mix the spice ingredients with the help of a blender or food processor for the best flavor.
- Please use freshly shredded cheese.
- It’s important to keep whisking/stirring your cheese sauce while it’s over the stove.

- Season your french fries immediately when they’re fresh out of the hot oil because they absorb the all that flavor and the seasoning sticks well to the fry too!
- Always add just a few teaspoons of seasoning first to your french fries to understand how much you prefer. You can always add more seasoning but you can’t remove extra seasoning. So please, start slow.

TIPS TO MAKE THE BEST COPYCAT TACO BELL NACHO FRIES EVERY SINGLE TIME
These copycat Taco Bell nacho fries and nacho cheese sauce are SO EASY to make, I love it ❤. But hey, here are a few things to keep in mind to make things even better-
- Please always use fresh ingredients when making this recipe. We often feel powders don’t go bad but they can and do. Make sure you have fresh ingredients on hand to get the best flavor!
- I suggest you mix the spice ingredients with the help of a blender or food processor. Just a few pulses and all those spices will mix really well together. I feel all that flavor comes out so much better.
- Please use freshly shredded cheese when making your nacho cheese sauce. Pre-shredded cheese is a huge no-no here because it doesn’t melt as well nor does it have that flavor fresh cheese has.
- Keep whisking/stirring your cheese sauce while it’s over the stove. This is extremely important!
- Please don’t let the cheese sauce heat for more than 5 minutes. It’s a really simple recipe but you need to remember this. If the cheese sauce heats up for a long time, it may get gritty.
- If your cheese sauce turns gritty, you can add some milk and thin it out over low heat. Keep whisking really well for a minute or two until it’s all mixed together and switch off the heat.
- And always make sure your oil is hot enough before frying your french fries plus fry in batches if you have too many french fries!
- I always suggest placing the fried stuff over a wire rack over a baking sheet after frying but here I don’t. Skip out on the wire rack over a baking sheet step here! Here, I suggest you strain the french fries with a slotted spoon or strainer before adding them to a large bowl and season them immediately.
- I suggest seasoning your french fries immediately when they’re fresh out of the hot oil because those french fries absorb all that flavor and the seasoning sticks well to the fry too!
- Always add just a few teaspoons of seasoning first to your french fries to understand how much you prefer. Don’t add everything all at once the first time. You can always add more seasoning but you can’t remove extra seasoning.
- This copycat Taco Bell nacho fries recipe tastes best eaten immediately, nice and fresh!
- When making this copycat Taco Bell nacho fries recipe, you can cook the fries as you like. I’ve deep fried my french fries here but you can bake the fries too. You can air fry your french fries in an air fryer too. An air fryer helps heaps if you don’t want to deep fry your fries!
- If you have leftovers of this recipe, go ahead and store the seasoned french fries in a separate airtight container from the cheese sauce. Store the airtight container of the french fries and the airtight container of the cheese sauce in the refrigerator. It will stay good for about 3 to 4 days.

- When making the seasoning for this Taco Bell nachos fries, you can just use cheddar cheese powder, sugar, lemon pepper seasoning and taco seasoning (instead of ground cumin, ground coriander, sweet paprika, garlic powder, onion powder and cayenne pepper).
- Add some minced bits of jalapeno to your creamy nacho sauce for an extra kick with every bite! You can also use a different cheese or a blend of different cheeses when making it.
- You can skip out on making our delicious nacho cheddar cheese sauce if you already have a favorite nacho cheese you buy from the market! Use a nacho cheese sauce you prefer along with these crispy fries.
