WHY YOU WILL LOVE THIS RECIPE
Okay, you’re gonna LOVE this copycat Starbucks matcha latte recipe.
It’s my new favorite drink and I’ve worked hard to come up with it giving it the best flavors ever.
A fine powder made with ground green tea leaves, matcha makes one of the best drinks on the planet!
This matcha latte has the most amazing creamy mouthfeel. It’s lush, rich and earthy with a very slight sweetness to it and the most delicious aroma ✨.
This refreshing silky smooth drink is gonna win over your heart.
Those earthy flavors and gorgeous green colors will make you feel like you’re sipping on a piece of earth.
And hey, if you’re new to matcha, don’t worry about using a bamboo whisk and things. I’ve made the process super simple ❤!
This copycat Starbucks version of matcha tea latte is my new favorite drink and I can’t wait for it to become yours too! So ditch your regular coffee latte and make this one instead ✨.
- Our homemade version of Starbucks Green tea latte is super easy to make. It’s ready in less than 5 minutes and I LOVE that about it. You’ll get a refreshing iced matcha tea latte super quick, the second you crave it. This makes it the perfect drink for me ❤!
- This copycat Starbucks matcha latte recipe uses simple ingredients making you get this drink at a fraction of the price. Our drink uses only 3 simple ingredients- matcha green tea powder (a fine powder made from green tea leaves), milk of your choice and simple syrup (or a sweetener you like!).
- It’s super customizable too. You don’t need to worry about too much sugar either, go ahead and add your favorite sweetener- vanilla syrup, maple syrup (mmm maple syrup!), brown sugar syrup or any natural sweetener you like. Use your choice of milk too– whole milk (regular milk), oat milk, soy milk, cashew milk, almond milk or coconut milk… whatever is your favorite type of milk. Add vanilla extract or literally what you like, make it yours!
- Matcha is really good for health as well! This fine powder also has caffeine but its effects are different from coffee. The absorption of caffeine is controlled thanks to L-theanine, an amino acid. This results in you feeling focused and less jittery. There may not be a crash either as there is with coffee so you usually won’t even need more caffeine for a couple of hours. Plus, studies show that matcha may reduce high blood pressure, the risk of heart disease, high cholesterol as well as keep your immune system healthy. It also may make your skin health better!
- This green tea latte has gentle matcha flavors making it the perfect matcha drink for a beginner.
So go ahead and skip the trip to the coffee shop and make this copycat Starbucks recipe from the comfort of your own home. I just know you’ll love this delicious drink ❤. I can’t wait for it to become your new favorite drink!

This Starbucks copycat recipe uses some really simple ingredients which gives you the most delicious homemade matcha latte at a fraction of the price. It’s one of the best copycat Starbucks matcha drinks ever.
The quality of ingredients is important here so use good quality ingredients!
To make Homemade Simple Syrup: (optional)
In case you don’t have simple syrup at home, here’s what you need to make some:
- Water
- Sugar
To make the best Starbucks Iced Matcha Latte Copycat Recipe:
- Matcha- New to matcha? Remember that it’s different from regular green tea. It differs from regular green tea leaves both in appearance and flavor. While regular green tea leaves are sold as loose leaves or in tea bags, matcha is sold as a fine powder, it’s not sold as green tea leaves. It uses the whole leaf because of which the health benefits of matcha are pretty high! Remember though that matcha is a type of green tea. Matcha has a rich earthy flavor and that earthy flavor can sometimes even be described as grassy. There are different grades of matcha green tea powder. When it comes to the grades of matcha and which type you should use in a latte, I would always suggest using ceremonial grade matcha for best results and a bright green color. Ceremonial grade matcha has a delicate earthy flavor, is rich and has a hint of sweetness. You can use a high quality culinary grade matcha too. Make sure you always use a high-quality matcha powder here. The health benefits of matcha are amazing too, this is a powerful ingredient ❤!
- Creamy milk of choice- Use your choice of milk, whatever you like when ordering Starbucks matcha drinks ❤! Any type of milk goes well here but I love sticking to a creamy milk such as oat milk, soy milk or regular milk (whole milk). You can use whatever you like in this green tea latte…almond milk. cashew milk, coconut milk, oat milk, soy milk, regular milk or half and half. Do you prefer almond milk, oat milk, soy milk, regular milk or something else? Let me know in the comments below!
- Simple syrup- The Starbucks version of matcha latte would use sweetened matcha powder before. The new Starbucks version of matcha latte now adds simple syrup (which they call classic syrup) to the drink unless you ask for a specific variation. I’ve stuck to adding simple syrup to my copycat Starbucks recipe too! I feel it adds a delicate sweetness while letting the matcha flavor come through. I’ve added just a little, not too much sugar syrup. You can use regular sugar, maple syrup (mmm maple syrup and matcha!), vanilla syrup (vanilla syrup is popular for a vanilla-ey sweetness!), brown sugar syrup or any natural sweetener, low sugar or zero sugar sweetener you prefer. You can add more sugar or less sugar too.
- Warm water- Warm water is essential to whisk our matcha powder in. It helps bring out the flavors, aroma, antioxidants and benefits of matcha powder. Please don’t use super hot water here and don’t use cold water either. Cold water won’t help much and hot water may burn our matcha. Warm water is preferable here for best results.
- Ice cubes- It’s an iced green tea drink after all 😉!

HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE STARBUCKS MATCHA LATTE RECIPE [Step-by-Step Instructions with Photos]
Please keep in mind that I go into lots of detail in all my recipes so you get to know all the super important tips and tricks when it comes to making a particular recipe. I always want you to make the BEST of whatever you’re cooking ❤.
STEP 1: MAKE THE SIMPLE SYRUP (OPTIONAL)
We are using simple syrup here. That’s what Starbucks uses in its regular matcha green tea latte (it calls it classic syrup). I love it because it adds a delicate sweetness while letting the matcha shine through.
Remember that simple syrup is optional here, you can use any sweetener you prefer or order with your Starbucks matcha latte such as brown sugar syrup, vanilla syrup, honey, maple syrup or any other regular, low calorie, zero sugar or natural sweetener you prefer.
Our simple syrup recipe uses really simple ingredients ;).
Add sugar and water to a saucepan.
Over medium heat, stir well to dissolve the sugar.
Constantly stir the sugar and hot water until everything comes to a boil and the sugar dissolves.
Once the mixture comes to a boil, reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 5 minutes. No need to stir your mixture here.
Once 5 minutes are up, switch off the heat and keep the simple syrup aside to cool down.
STEP 2: MIX THE MATCHA IN WARM WATER
I’m using an electric milk frother here. You can also use a regular whisk or bamboo matcha whisk. An electric milk frother is a great option if you don’t have a bamboo whisk
So yes, heat some water until it’s just a little warm and pour it into the latte glass you’re using. If you’re using a bamboo whisk, pour the water into a small bowl.
Make sure you don’t use hot water or even cold water here. We need only warm water. If the water is too hot, our matcha may burn and if the water is too cold, the matcha may not mix well and all its benefits won’t be extracted either.
Now sift the matcha ground green tea leaves powder into the latte glass or small bowl. Sift the fine powder well.
And now whether you’re using a bamboo matcha whisk, electric milk frother or regular whisk, start mixing the matcha green tea powder with the warm water until it completely mixes and turns nice and frothy.
I’ve not spoken much about using a bamboo matcha whisk here because I want this recipe to be easy if it’s the first time you’re making some matcha and don’t have a bamboo matcha whisk at home. I don’t want to confuse you ❤.
STEP 3: FINISH MAKING THIS COPYCAT STARBUCKS MATCHA LATTE RECIPE
Now if you used a bamboo whisk, transfer your matcha mixture from the small bowl to a tall glass of your preference.
To your frothy matcha mixture in the latte glass, pour in the simple syrup…
Mix well again using your electric milk frother, whisk or a fork. Don’t use a bamboo matcha whisk here.
Now add some ice until it reaches about 3/4th of the glass or as much as you prefer.
And gently pour in the milk of your choice for that gorgeous bright green color effect (any type of milk works here- regular milk, almond milk, oat milk, coconut milk, cashew milk…).
Gently mix and take a sip of your homemade matcha latte. Isn’t that an absolutely delicious drink? And all from the comfort of your own home without having to go to a coffee shop and at the fraction of the price.
Go ahead and top it up with some milk froth or whatever you prefer and enjoy. You deserve that delicious drink ✨.

Notes ✍🏼
- The quality of ingredients is important here since this is a simple recipe with very few ingredients. Always use the highest quality ingredients. Lower quality ingredients won’t give you a great flavor!
- Use your milk of choice. You can use any type of milk but I suggest a creamy milk to work with those rich matcha flavors for the best results (psst I LOVE oat milk and soy milk here!).
- There are different grades of matcha. Use a high-quality matcha powder for best results and a vibrant green color. The highest quality matcha will also give you a delicate flavor that’s… incredible. Please don’t use a lower quality matcha.
- For a stronger matcha flavor, add an extra half teaspoon of matcha powder (or maybe even a whole teaspoon of matcha powder).
- If it’s your first time trying matcha or you’re still warming up to it, you can add about half teaspoon to 1 teaspoon of matcha powder.
- The best part about this copycat Starbucks recipe is that you don’t need to add too much sugar! Add less sugar or sweetener if you want. You can add more sugar or sweetener too if you like! See how sweet you like your drink and work with it!
- Matcha is a fine powder but it can clump up. To prevent this from happening, sift the matcha and add it over the warm water. Don’t pour the warm water into the matcha powder.
- You can add all the ingredients to a blender and blend it all! You can use a mason jar too. Add the ingredients, seal the mason jar and shake it well to mix everything.
- You can also make some hot matcha latte. To make hot matcha latte, just go ahead and pour hot milk into your matcha mixture in Step 3!

WHY IS GREEN TEA MATCHA SUPER AWESOME?
Green tea matcha is incredible. This gorgeously green fine powder is absolute magic ✨!
If you’re new to matcha, keep in mind that it’s different from regular green tea. Matcha is a type of green tea but it’s not the same as regular green tea.
Matcha is made from the leaves of the tea plant, camellia sinensis which is kept shaded for a few weeks before harvest.
Whole green tea leaves of matcha are not sold though. The green tea leaves are ground into a fine powder. This fine powder of a gorgeous vibrant green color is what we know and love as matcha powder.
Matcha is super awesome because it’s filled with health benefits. I’ll discuss just a little here but you can go read on the health benefits of matcha in detail as well. This vibrant green tea powder will surprise you with all its goodness…
Matcha is filled with antioxidants. Antioxidants help keep cells safe from free radicals. Free radicals can hurt your cells and cause diseases.
There have been studies done to show that matcha may be good to reduce high blood pressure, the risk of heart disease, high cholesterol as well as keep your immune system healthy.
It also may make your skin health better.
Matcha also contains an amino acid called L-theanine. This amino acid may stimulate alpha wave activity in the brain. Stimulating alpha wave activity basically leads to you feeling calm, relaxed and less anxious while staying focused.
Since matcha uses the whole leaf, we get lots more benefits compared to some other teas where we steep the leaves instead of using the whole leaf.
And hey, these are just a few benefits of matcha! You can go read more about the benefits of matcha as well. There are so many, it’s amazing!
This delicious drink tastes great, looks gorgeous and is known to be a super food too. I think it’s a great option if you want to skip your regular coffee latte today ❤.

TIPS TO MAKE THE BEST STARBUCKS MATCHA LATTE RECIPE EVERY SINGLE TIME
This copycat Starbucks green tea latte is made with super simple ingredients and is really easy to make too. It’s made at the fraction of the price as well which I love ❤.
And well a drink that may help reduce the risk of heart disease, reduce high cholesterol and high blood pressure, help the immune system and make skin health better? Matcha is a super ingredient!
This beautiful drink is easy to make and is super healthy too but hey, here are a few tips you can keep in mind to come up with the best homemade matcha latte every single time!
- The quality of ingredients is important in this best Starbucks iced matcha latte copycat recipe since this is a simple recipe with very few ingredients. Always use the highest quality ingredients. Lower quality ingredients won’t give you that amazing flavor.
- Go ahead and use your milk of choice in this Starbucks green tea latte copycat recipe. You can use any type of milk such as almond milk, oat milk, coconut milk but I suggest a creamy milk to work with those matcha flavors for the best results! Let me know what your choice of milk is, almond milk, coconut milk, oat milk, regular milk…!
- It’s not necessary to make the simple syrup here. You can use your own simple syrup if you have some at home already or even regular sugar, vanilla syrup, brown sugar syrup, maple syrup, honey or any natural sweetener of your choice.
- There are different grades of matcha. Use a high-quality matcha powder for best results and a vibrant green color. The highest quality matcha will also give you a delicate flavor that’s… incredible. Please don’t use a lower quality matcha. Ceremonial grade matcha is preferred here or even a premium quality culinary grade matcha.
- Want a stronger matcha flavor? Go ahead and add an extra half teaspoon of matcha powder (or maybe even a whole teaspoon of matcha powder) for a stronger matcha flavor and a vibrant green color.
- If it’s your first time trying matcha or you’re still warming up to the flavor, you can add about 1 teaspoon of matcha powder.
- The best part about this copycat Starbucks recipe is that you don’t need to add too much sugar! Adjust the grams of sugar according to your preference. Add less sugar or sweetener if you want. You can add more sugar or sweetener too if you like! See how sweet or how much sugar syrup you like in your drink and adjust the sweetness accordingly.
- Matcha powder is different from regular green tea leaves or tea bags. It’s a fine powder but it needs to be mixed in well, while regular green tea leaves or tea bags are steeped. Matcha is a fine powder but it can clump up and that’s no mystery but it can be prevented if you sift it as well as add the matcha over the warm water. Please don’t pour the warm water into the matcha powder.
- Don’t use super hot water because it’ll burn your green tea powder. Don’t use cold water either because your matcha won’t completely let out all those benefits, flavors and aroma. Use warm water instead. I watched a video tutorial on this a long time ago. That video tutorial really stuck with me and I researched more about the process, this is the best way in my opinion.
- Don’t worry if you don’t have a bamboo matcha whisk or electric milk frother. You can always use a regular whisk, fork or even make this delicious drink in the blender or mason jar.
- You can add all those simple ingredients to a blender and blend it all! You can also use a mason jar. Add the ingredients, seal the mason jar and shake it well to mix everything together.
- You can also make some hot matcha latte. To make hot matcha latte, go ahead and pour hot milk into your matcha mixture in the last step!
RECIPE & DIET VARIATIONS YOU CAN TRY
If you’re new to matcha, remember that matcha is a type of green tea that is made by grinding the whole leaf. It’s cultivated differently too.
Because of this, it’s different from regular green tea sold as green tea leaves or in tea bags. This gives it a different flavor and you can make lattes with it and serve it in many different ways which is pretty awesome.
Our delicious green tea drink here uses such simple ingredients, I love it! I get to have an iced matcha latte for a fraction of the price.
So hey, go ahead and skip the trip to the coffee shop and enjoy this copycat Starbucks version iced matcha latte from the comfort of your own home ❤.
You can do so much with it. It uses such simple ingredients and you can add so much to it to make it yours. Here are a few variations-
- Don’t get confused by the different grades of matcha. It’s always better to use the highest quality of matcha or something close. High-quality matcha powder grade is ceremonial grade matcha powder. You can also use a high quality culinary grade matcha. Experiment with different brands and see what flavor you like best! Lower quality matcha just won’t taste good enough.
- Add more matcha green tea powder for a stronger matcha flavor. If it’s your first time trying some matcha tea latte, add a little less matcha powder and see how you like it.
- Use your choice of milk, how you do when ordering Starbucks matcha drinks ❤! I love sticking to a creamy milk such as oat milk, soy milk or regular milk (whole milk). You can use whatever you like here…almond milk. cashew milk, coconut milk, oat milk, soy milk, regular milk or half and half.
- I’ve used simple syrup here for a delicate sweetness. You can use regular sugar (adjust the grams of sugar according to your preference), maple syrup, honey, vanilla syrup (vanilla syrup is popular for a vanilla-ey sweetness!), brown sugar syrup or any natural sweetener you prefer.
- The best part about making your homemade version of this Starbucks iced matcha latte recipe is that you can add as much sweetener as you like as well. You can make your drink really sweet or even add less sugar or sweetener or completely skip out on it too.
- I’ve kept this recipe simple for you guys so you can go ahead and use a bamboo matcha whisk, an electric milk frother or a regular whisk to make it. But hey, you can also add all those simple ingredients to a blender and blend it all! You can also use a mason jar. Add the ingredients, seal the mason jar and shake it well to mix everything together.
- Go ahead and have it the way you have your Starbucks version of iced matcha latte. Want to add brown sugar syrup? Go ahead! Wanna add some lavender cream on top? Do it! Cinnamon powder? Add it!
- Add some warm spices to your green tea latte like cloves, cinnamon, cardamom for a warm hint of flavor. Simple ingredients can make a big difference.
- You can also add some vanilla extract to your copycat Starbucks recipe. Add a few drops of vanilla extract to the matcha mixture in Step 2. Vanilla extract will add a hint of vanilla flavor to this delicious drink. You can also add peppermint extract or maybe even this strawberry sauce from my Korean Strawberry Milk Recipe made with Fresh Strawberries for a strawberry matcha latte! You can do so much with this recipe!
- A great option for some added caffeine? Add a shot of espresso to your copycat Starbucks matcha latte recipe for a caffeine-filled green tea drink!
- Make some hot matcha latte too! To make some hot matcha latte, just pour in hot milk into your matcha mixture in Step 3. Stir and enjoy.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
When making this Starbucks matcha latte recipe, remember that matcha is a fine powder. It doesn’t come in the form of green tea leaves or tea bags.
Because of this, we need to mix our matcha green tea powder really well in water to prevent it from clumping up.
The perfect way to make matcha to make sure it’s smooth and not clumpy would be to sift the matcha into warm water (please don’t use hot water here).
Make sure you don’t ever pour the warm water into the matcha powder.
Then use a bamboo whisk, an electric milk frother (like me) or even a regular whisk to mix the matcha mixture really well so there aren’t many clumps at all!
