And there you have it, that’s all this dalgona chocolate recipe is!

Some fatty milk topped with a cloud of chocolate cream.

The best part is there are so many ways you can enjoy this chocolate drink. I usually like eating a few spoonfulls of my dalgona chocolate (it’s like ice cream over milk ❤!) and then I go ahead and mix everything together and make it a thick delicious chocolate milk shake.

You can also serve this chocolate drink as a gorgeous chocolate layered hot chocolate to cozy up with…

Or maybe even serve it over some ice cold milk on a hot day (ice chocolate 🧊!).

That fluffy layer of chocolate over milk is the most delish sight ever!

You can serve this dalgona chocolate recipe in a bajillion different ways with so many different variations and toppings too.

And thanks to it having no coffee, it’s a pretty good variation to enjoy this creamy drink without too much caffeine.

You can call this the kid-friendly version of the original dalgona (which is made using coffee) because the caffeine in this drink is pretty low thanks to there being no coffee in it.

So, what exactly is dalgona?

The dalgona coffee trend started in 2020 when dalgona coffee got really famous after being spoken about in a Korean television show. A Korean actor tried the fluffy coffee drink in a coffee shop in Macau and said it looked and tasted like Dalgona, a famous South Korean candy that sort of looks like whipped coffee (has a honeycomb candy texture) and tastes caramelly/butterscotchy/a little bitter with a burnt sugar flavor.

And so, this coffee drink got the name dalgona coffee and became super famous in South Korea and then around the world thanks to social media.

There was a literal dalgona coffee trend and people all over the world started making it and started posting videos of their dalgona recipes on social media. It went really viral at that time.

Traditional dalgona coffee is basically equal parts instant coffee, sugar and water whipped until everything becomes light, airy and creamyyy. Instant coffee is the main ingredient here.

The coffee mixture cloud is then spooned over a mug of milk and enjoyed.

Its origins are pretty debatable and super interesting, with so many countries around the world making it in different ways and having their own versions of it way before it gained worldwide fame in 2020. I’m not going to get into it here but you can go ahead and read on it if you’re interested ❤.

Dalgona coffee is absolutely delicious and I one day thought how awesome it’d be to add in some cocoa powder into the coffee mixture maybe?…

So I did.

And…

It tasted SO GOOD 😍! Like a fluffy mocha coffee.

And then I thought how good a chocolate cloud would taste!

That turned into me trying to explore how to make some creamy fluffy chocolate without any coffee in it. I wanted to make a new recipe with no coffee in it at all, only fluffy chocolate over milk, just to experiment cause the thought of it sounded so good!

And this recipe was born!

Dalgona chocolate recipe in a tall glass, with Dalgona cream dollops being topped on top with a spoon.

This dalgona chocolate recipe is the whipped chocolate version of the dalgona coffee recipe.

Chocolate doesn’t whip on its own the way instant coffee does (yep, you can’t whip equal parts of cocoa powder, sugar and water, it doesn’t froth up). So I had to improvize.

I thought of using heavy cream (because it whips well!) and added some cocoa powder in.

It was good but I wasn’t very into the taste of the cocoa powder with the cream (even though it’s one of my favorite cocoa powders out there!)

I then thought of whipping some molten dark chocolate with the heavy cream…

I tried it and this delicious chocolate cream cloud came in!

It tasted SO good! And of course, I just needed to come here and share it with you ❤.

I hope you guys enjoy this new recipe!

At TheButtery Fairytale, we care so much about food memories. You can share your stories with this recipe in the comments below whether this is the first time you’re trying this recipe or if you’ve already had it multiple times before, I would love to hear all about it!

I would also love to share something pretty interesting with you guys.

When researching about this whipped chocolate version of the dalgona coffee recipe and if it even exists out there, I came across people making chocolate dalgona using egg whites instead of heavy cream and even aquafaba for a vegan version.

I’ve kept this recipe egg-free but it’s so interesting how different versions of this recipe exist out there. There are so many different dalgona recipes out there. Some people use dalgona to ice their cakes too, so cool!

I hope you enjoy and fall deep in love with this cozy chocolatey recipe ❤.

INGREDIENTS & SUBSTITUTIONS FOR DALGONA CHOCOLATE RECIPE

For exact ingredient measurements, please scroll down to the Recipe Card.

Ingredients needed to make Dalgona chocolate recipe having milk, sugar, heavy cream and chocolate.
  • Dark chocolate- Can pretty much call it a main ingredient! The chocolate you use will add its flavor to your chocolate dalgona. I love making dalgona chocolate with a 50% dark bar of chocolate. I prefer it over everything else. You can substitute with 4 teaspoons unsweetened cocoa powder, Nesquick powder, hot cocoa mix/hot chocolate mix, chocolate chips, half milk chocolate and half dark chocolate or maybe even just milk chocolate if you want a lighter taste of chocolate in your chocolate cream. Experiment and see what you like best! The chocolatier you want your chocolate cream to be, the more chocolate you should use.
  • Heavy cream- Remember the cream you’re using needs to have at least 30% fat content to whip up properly. This is another main ingredient here! The high fat content helps the cream whip up and stay whipped for long too. Heavy cream and heavy whipping cream contain about 36% fat content. There’s also something called whipping cream (also called light whipping cream) that contains about 30% fat content. Don’t get confused though, just make sure the cream you’re using contains at least 30% fat content and it’ll whip up no problem. You can substitute with canned coconut cream. I’ve also seen people making this recipe with egg whites as well as aquafaba during my research.
  • Sugar- I’ve used white granulated sugar here. How much sugar you prefer in your dalgona chocolate recipe will depend on the chocolate you’re using. I found one tablespoon sugar being perfect for this recipe while using 50% dark chocolate. The more you make this recipe, the more you’ll understand how much sugar is enough for you. You can substitute here with any sweetener of your choice such as powdered sugar, confectioners sugar, cane sugar, brown sugar, honey, maple syrup or whatever are your favorite sugar-free or low sugar substitutes.
  • Milk- I love using creamy whole milk here ❤. So fatty and delicious. Especially mixed in with that creamy cloud of chocolate… wow! You can substitute with whatever milk you prefer such as skim milk, oat milk, cashew milk, coconut milk, almond milk or a lactose-free milk that you prefer… Literally any milk you want will taste incredible here!

Once again, for exact ingredient measurements, please scroll down to the Recipe Card.

RECIPE & DIET VARIATIONS YOU CAN TRY

This simple dalgona chocolate recipe makes for such a gorgeous little chocolate treat. The best thing is you can have it with some hot milk for a nice hot chocolate or with some iced milk for a cold creamy chocolate drink.

But these are not the only ways you can have this super tasty dalgona chocolate recipe. There are a bajillion different ways you can have it and that’s one of the best things about this recipe ❤.

Let’s explore some different variations out there!

  • Use whatever bar of chocolate you like! That’s exactly why I made this dalgona chocolate recipe this way. I know we all have our own personal favorites when it comes to chocolate and I wanted you to be able to use the chocolate you love! So yes, if you want to serve a creamy, fluffy version of your favorite chocolate, go ahead and use it when making this delicious chocolate dessert drink. I prefer sticking to dark chocolate because I feel that gives a delish chocolatey flavor here but you can use milk chocolate, white chocolate, or even a combination of two or more chocolates… so many great options, go wild 💃🏻!
  • Don’t have chocolate at home? That’s okay! Just go ahead and use your favorite hot chocolate mix, unsweetened cocoa powder or cacao powder… or even some Nesquick powder.
  • When it comes to the cream, it’s best to use a cream that has a fat content of at least 30%. You can go ahead and use heavy cream or heavy whipping cream (these contain 36% fat). You can use whipping cream/light whipping cream as well that contains about 30% fat. The higher the fat content, the easier it’ll be to whip the cream and the fattier your cream will be too with that right consistency.
  • You can substitute the heavy cream with with canned coconut cream, cashew cream or any other heavy cream substitute you prefer.
  • The amount of sugar you prefer in your dalgona chocolate recipe will depend on the chocolate you’re using. If your chocolate is on the sweeter side, you might want to cut back on some sugar and if it’s on the bitter side, you may want to add more, it all comes down to your preference. The more you make this recipe, the more you’ll understand how much sugar is enough for you. You can add more sugar and make this chocolate dalgona sweeter or cut down on the sugar completely if you want.
  • I’ve used white granulated sugar here but you can use whatever sweetener you prefer. There are so many options such as powdered sugar, confectioners sugar, cane sugar, brown sugar, honey, maple syrup or maybe even whatever are your favorite sugar-free or low sugar substitutes.
  • This chocolate dalgona recipe is crazy versatile! That’s because you can go ahead and top your chocolate dalgona over whatever milk you prefer as well! You don’t have to just stick to regular milk. You can go ahead and use skim milk, oat milk, almond milk, cashew milk, coconut milk, or a lactose-free milk that you prefer… Literally any milk you like! This chocolate dessert drink will taste amazing every.single.time.
  • You can play around with the milk you’re using as well. Go ahead and add some extra flavor by adding a few drops of vanilla extract in. Or maybe even make your milk sweet by pouring in some honey, sweetened condensed milk or maple syrup to it.
  • Go ahead and top this chocolate dalgona over a glass of cold milk. You can add ice to the milk too if you want it even colder. This is a perfect cold chocolate drink you can enjoy during summers and spring. Just sip on that cold creamy chocolate milk, so refreshing!
  • You can top this chocolate dalgona over some hot milk too for a different twist on hot chocolate. It’s an absolutely perfect cozy drink for fall and winter. You can also top your chocolate dalgona hot chocolate with some marshmallow fluff, mini marshmallows, chocolate shavings, chocolate chips or sprinkles… whatever you prefer.
  • Two super fun and interesting ways you can have this chocolate dalgona recipe are either by topping it over some milk and slowly sipping on it and enjoying it or by topping it over the milk and then immediately mixing everything together to make a thick chocolate shake. I prefer something right in between. I prefer topping my milk with that cloud of creamy chocolate, taking a few bites, using a straw to sip on it so I can get that milk and dollops of creamy chocolate mousse in and finally as a last step, I like mixing everything together and making it a chocolate milkshake. Yum!
  • You can top your dalgona chocolate with some ribbons of caramel sauce or chocolate sauce for added richness. Can you imagine that delicious chocolate caramelliness some caramel sauce will add to the chocolate dalgona? Yum! You can also pour some chocolate syrup down the sides of the glass you’re using before pouring in the milk for a super pretty look.
  • You can add a pinch of some warm spices to your dalgona chocolate too, such as maybe ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg and/or ground cloves. Ah, so delightfully warm, cozy and comforting. You can add a sprinkle of cocoa powder on top too or maybe even a single block of your favorite chocolate.
  • You can also make lots of dalgona chocolate and top it over just a little milk so you have more creamy chocolate and less milk or you can go ahead and make just a little dalgona chocolate and top it over lots of milk for a slight hint of chocolate flavor in your milk.
  • You can use different flavored milk too such as chocolate milk (dalgona chocolate milk, yum!) or maybe even strawberry milk. You can top your regular hot chocolate with this chocolate dalgona too for some added richness.
  • You can also spoon this chocolate dalgona over your favorite milk tea (try our Easy Homemade Japanese Royal Milk Tea Recipe) or whatever is your favorite drink and enjoy a delicious new flavor. Yum!
  • Go ahead and add a coffee twist to this whole thing. If you like coffee or want to try something new, there are so many things you can do such as making some chocolate whipped coffee. You can make the original whipped coffee drink (from the dalgona coffee trend) by whipping equal parts tablespoons of hot water, instant coffee granules or instant coffee powder and sugar. Then add in a tablespoon of cocoa powder to that coffee whip, whip everything a little more and make it a coffee chocolate cloud. Then gently spoon it atop some hot or cold milk and enjoy. Yum chocolate flavored coffee!
  • Another thing you can do to make this a chocolate coffee drink is go ahead and make a drink similar to mocha latte. Just use coffee instead of milk and top your coffee with some dalgona chocolate. You can serve this dalgona latte hot or cold (by topping this chocolate dalgona over iced coffees). This mocha dalgona coffee is a delicious drink and the combination of coffee and chocolate is pretty incredible.
  • You can also serve your chocolate dalgona over some ice cream for some added creaminess and richness. Such an indulgent treat. You can also serve it over cupcakes, brownies or even a slice of cake (ooh chocolate cake)!
  • I know I’m gonna sound a little extreme saying this or maybe not BUT hey, you can go ahead and have this chocolate dalgona as it is without topping it over milk or anything else! It just tastes so good omg 💖…. CHOCOLATE WHIPPED CREAM!
  • Feeling adventurous? Or maybe want to skip out on heavy cream? I’ve seen people making chocolate dalgona using egg whites from raw eggs instead of using heavy cream. I’ve seen others using aquafaba instead too. Please remember though that raw eggs are not safe unless they’ve been pasteurized so please make sure you use pasteurized eggs. You can also go ahead and buy liquid egg whites from your local grocery store because these have been pasteurized already. I’ve not tried my chocolate dalgona using egg whites or aquafaba though so I’m not sure how it’ll taste but I think it’ll give a pretty stable foam.

Note- If you think you have an ingredient that you feel is suitable as a substitute for a certain ingredient in this recipe, according to your dietary preference, you can use it and let us know how it works as a substitute in the comments below. Dairy-Free Adaptation:

  • You can substitute heavy cream with canned fatty coconut milk and use the thick creamy layer of coconut milk on top. You can use coconut cream too. I’ve heard cashew cream is a pretty good substitute as well. I’ve also seen people making chocolate dalgona using egg whites from raw eggs instead of heavy cream. I’ve seen aquafaba being used too. Please keep in mind though that raw eggs are not safe if they aren’t pasteurized so please make sure you use pasteurized eggs. You can also go ahead and buy liquid egg whites from your local grocery store because they’ve been pasteurized already, I haven’t tried egg whites or aquafaba but I think they’ll give a pretty stable foam when whipped. You can use any dairy-free milk or cream you like and know is fatty and creamy to whip up no problem.
  • There are lots of different types of milk you can use to serve your chocolate dalgona over. Vegan Adaptation:

A few things to turn this into a delicious vegan dalgona chocolate recipe…

  • To make some vegan dalgona chocolate, use vegan dark chocolate or whatever is your favorite type of vegan chocolate. You can use vegan cocoa powder too if you want.
  • You can substitute heavy cream with canned fatty coconut milk and use the thick creamy layer of coconut milk on top. You can use coconut cream too. I’ve heard cashew cream is a pretty good substitute as well. I’ve seen aquafaba (chickpea liquid) being used too to make this a healthy dalgona recipe. You can use any dairy-free milk or cream you like and know is fatty and creamy to whip up well.
  • Sugar is sometimes not vegan. That’s because it is usually refined in a process that involves bone char. To sweeten your delicious dalgona chocolate vegan recipe, you can experiment and see which sweetener you like best. Each sweetener will add its own unique taste to your chocolate dalgona. You can try a type of vegan sugar you prefer, or maybe even coconut sugar… there are loads of wonderful options out there! You can skip out on a sweetener if the vegan chocolate you’re using is already lending sweetness to your vegan dalgona chocolate cloud.
  • There are many plant-based dairy-free milk options out there you can use such as almond milk, coconut milk, oat milk, cashew milk, macademia milk… maybe even vanilla soy milk. HOW TO MAKE DALGONA CHOCOLATE RECIPE [Step-by-Step Instructions With Photos]

For exact ingredient measurements and instructions without photos, please scroll down to the Recipe Card.

Please keep in mind that I go into lots of detail in all my recipes so you get to know all the super important tips and tricks when it comes to making a particular recipe. I always want you to make the BEST of whatever you’re cooking ❤.

STEP 1: MELT THE CHOCOLATE

In a small bowl, add your chocolate…

You can cut your chocolate into small pieces to make things easier.

Dark chocolate blocks in a small glass bowl.

Add in some heavy cream.

Dark chocolate blocks in a small glass bowl drizzled with heavy cream.

We need to melt our chocolate and to do this, we can use the microwave or double boil it.

I’ve used my microwave here. Go ahead and microwave your cream and chocolate mixture for about 10 to 15 seconds.

Be careful not to overheat it.

Slightly melted dark chocolate blocks in a small glass bowl drizzled with heavy cream.

Your cream will be pretty warm so gently mix that warm cream with your chocolate, melting it in the process, using a spoon or fork.

If you feel the heavy cream isn’t warm enough, you can again microwave it in 5 second interval bursts but it most probably will be warm enough to melt the chocolate within 15 seconds of heating.

Dark chocolate blocks melted in a small glass bowl with heavy cream, everything being stirred with a small spoon.

Give it a good mix until the chocolate melts and mixes completely with the heavy cream.

Melted dark chocolate with heavy cream in a small glass bowl with a small spoon in it.

STEP 2: WHIP WHIP WHIPPP!

Add the heavy cream and sugar to a large bowl.

A large glass bowl with heavy cream and sugar in it.

Start whipping it over medium speed using an electric hand mixer fit with the beater or whisk attachments. Don’t worry if you don’t have an electric mixer…

There are so many other ways you can whip this chocolate cream into a pillowy cloud of chocolateness.

You can use a stand mixer, blender, electric whisk, immersion blender, even a hand whisk (it may take some time and lots of energy but your cream will whip!), maybe even manually in a mason jar or perhaps a milk frother too.

You can experiment and see which method you like best!

A large glass bowl with heavy cream and sugar in it being stirred with an electric hand mixer.

Once you see the cream mixture start to thicken up a bit in about a minute or so, add your melted chocolate mixture.

A large glass bowl with heavy cream, sugar and melted chocolate in it being stirred with an electric hand mixer.

Continue whipping until you reach soft peaks. Medium peaks are okay too. This takes me about 5 to 6 minutes with the electric hand mixer.

Note: The amount of time it’ll take for the heavy cream to whip up depends on loads of things such as:

  • The climate of the place you’re living in;
  • The brand of heavy cream you’re using;
  • The fat percentage of the heavy cream;
  • How much heavy cream you’re using;
  • The temperature of the heavy cream;
  • The equipment you’re using to whip the heavy cream;
  • The speed you’re whipping your heavy cream chocolate mixture at;
  • How cold the bowl and equipment is…

So yes, it doesn’t have to take the exact time my heavy cream takes to whip up.

Just be patient and your heavy cream will whip up in no time ❤.

So yes, moving forward…

How do you know you’ve reached the soft peaks stage?…

Just go ahead and raise your hand mixer with some of that chocolate cream. Your whipped chocolate dalgona cream should form peaks that curl down a little, these are soft peaks.

Close up of a soft peak of whipped Dalgona chocolate cream.

It’s like your heavy cream is not a thick liquid anymore and has started to gain structure and fluff up.

Whipped Dalgona chocolate cream in a large glass bowl.

I prefer soft peaks but you can go ahead and whip your chocolate dalgona until it forms stiff peaks as well if you’re confident and know you won’t overwhip it.

STEP 3: TOP YOUR MILK & ENJOY!

Take a gorgeous glass or mug and fill it with creamy milk.

Now, top it up with your chocolate dalgona…

And some more… (Psst! A little secret between us? I almost finished half the chocolate dalgona while topping it over the milk 😉).

And enjoy ❤!

TIPS TO MAKE THE BEST DALGONA CHOCOLATE RECIPE

You guys, this dalgona chocolate recipe for one (don’t worry, you can make it for loads of people too!) is just so easy to make and is ready in less then 10 minutes! Yay 💃🏻!!!

First up, about whipping your cream into gorgeous pillows of goodness… It’s super easy and you probably won’t need these tips BUT if your cream isn’t whipping up for some reason or if you want to make things even easier when whipping your cream, you can check these tips out below:

  • It’s best to use a cream that has a fat content of at least 30%. You can use heavy cream or heavy whipping cream (these contain 36% fat content). You can use whipping cream/light whipping cream as well that contains about 30% to 35% fat content. The higher the fat content, the easier it is to whip the cream and get some gorgeous pillowy gooodness!
  • Always make sure you use cold heavy cream! It just whips better. You can keep your heavy cream in the freezer for about 5 minutes before using it to make sure it’s extra cold. DON’T freeze your heavy cream though! Whipping frozen heavy cream may result in curdled cream.
  • You can also go ahead and keep the beaters and bowl you’ll be using in the freezer to make sure everything is extra cold. It makes whipping the cream so much easier.
  • You can also place the bowl you’ll be whipping your cream in over another bowl of iced water too to make things even colder during whipping.
  • I suggest using an electric hand mixer with the beater or whisk attachments to whip your heavy cream and chocolate mixture for that perfect chocolate whipped cream.
  • But if you don’t have an electric mixer, don’t worry. There are many other ways you can whip this chocolate cream into a beautiful pillowy chocolate cloud of goodness. You can use a stand mixer, an electric whisk, a blender, an immersion blender, even a hand-held whisk (it may take some time and lots of energy but your cream will whip!), maybe manually in a mason jar or perhaps even a milk frother. You can experiment and see which method you prefer best.
  • Please keep in mind that you’ll need to whip your heavy cream for a couple of minutes at least. If you feel your heavy cream is not whipping up, maybe you’re not whipping it long enough? You may feel it’s taking a long time but be patient with it ❤.
  • Keep a check on your heavy cream chocolate mixture and don’t overwhip it! Overwhipping your heavy cream mixture may curdle it, give it a yellow hue and turn it into butter! Always stop at that stage where your chocolate cream forms soft to medium peaks. Don’t continue to whip till you form stiff peaks. Go for stiff peaks only if you’re confident enough and want it that way and once you reach stiff peaks, don’t go ahead and whip it for a long time, just stop and enjoy your chocolate dalgona.

So yep, that’s about the heavy cream and some tips to help it whip without any problem!

Here are a few other tips to make your chocolate dalgona even more awesomesauce than it already is!…

  • Go ahead and use a good quality bar of chocolate that’s your favorite. That’ll make things so much more fun. I mean, imagine enjoying a whipped creamy version of your favorite chocolate over some milk, yum!
  • Chocolate burns really fast so stick to microwaving it with a little heavy cream for just 10 to 15 seconds. Then use the heat from that heavy cream to melt the chocolate. Don’t overheat your cream chocolate mixture. If you feel your heavy cream is not warm enough to melt the chocolate then heat it again in the microwave in short 5 second intervals. Remember, the cream needs to be warm, not hot.
  • How much sugar you prefer in your dalgona chocolate recipe depends on the chocolate you’re using. You might want to cut back on some sugar If your chocolate is on the sweeter side and you might want to add more if it’s on the bitter side. It all comes down to your preference. I found 1 tablespoon sugar being perfect for this recipe when using 50% dark chocolate. The more you make this recipe, the more you’ll understand how much sugar is enough for you. You can also add in just a little sugar before starting to whip everything in the beginning, then try your chocolate cream after whipping it a bit and add more sugar if you want.
  • Use a large bowl when you’re whipping your chocolate-heavy cream mixture so everything doesn’t splatter all over the place.
  • And for a deliciously creamy milk drink, go ahead and froth the milk just a little and then top it up with this chocolate dalgona to have the most incredible cloud drink ever ❤.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why is it called ‘dalgona’?

Dalgona coffee got really famous in 2020 when it was spoken about in a Korean television show.

A Korean actor tried the fluffy coffee drink in a coffee shop in Macau and said it looks and tastes like Dalgona, a famous South Korean candy that sort of looks like whipped coffee (has a honeycomb candy texture) and tastes caramelly/butterscotchy/a little bitter with a burnt sugar flavor.

And so, this whipped coffee drink got the name dalgona coffee and became super famous in South Korea and then around the world through social media.

It went incredibly viral at that time. People all over the world started making this coffee whip drink and posting videos about it on social media.

And what exactly does the word “dalgona” mean? In Korean, the word dalgona means something like “It’s sweet”.

What are some tips to achieve a thick and fluffy
dalgona chocolate texture? How do I make my dalgona thicker?

There are quite a few things you can do to get a deliciously thick and fluffy dalgona chocolate (just that right consistency!) every single time.

Here are a few tips:

  • Please use heavy cream that has a fat content of at least 30%. This is a super main ingredient. You can use heavy cream or heavy whipping cream (these contain 36% fat content). You can use whipping cream/light whipping cream as well that contains about 30% to 35% fat content. The higher fat content makes it easier to whip the cream and get some gorgeous pillowy fluffiness!
  • Always use cold heavy cream! It whips better. You can also keep your heavy cream in the freezer for about 5 minutes before using it to make sure it’s extra cold. Please DON’T ever freeze your heavy cream though! Whipping frozen heavy cream may result in curdled cream 😱.
  • You can also keep the beaters and bowl you’ll be using in the freezer to make sure everything is extra cold when whipping the cream 💙. It makes whipping the cream easier.
  • You can also place the bowl you’ll be whipping your heavy cream in over another bowl of iced water to make things even colder while whipping.
  • I suggest using an electric hand mixer with the beater or whisk attachments to whip your heavy cream and chocolate mixture for that perfect fluffy chocolate whipped cream. But…
  • Don’t worry if you don’t have an electric mixer. There are many other ways you can whip this chocolate cream into a beautiful pillowy chocolate cloud. You can use a stand mixer, an electric whisk, a blender, an immersion blender, even a hand whisk (it may take some time and lots of energy but your cream will whip!), maybe manually in a mason jar or perhaps even a milk frother. Go ahead and experiment and see which method you prefer best.
  • Please remember that you’ll need to whip your heavy cream for a couple of minutes at least. It won’t whip up instantly. If you feel your heavy cream is not whipping up, maybe you’re not whipping it long enough? So be patient with your heavy cream ❤.
  • Also keep a check on your heavy cream chocolate mixture and don’t overwhip it! Overwhipping your heavy cream mixture may curdle it, give it a yellow hue and make it butter! Always stop at that stage where your chocolate cream forms soft to medium peaks. Don’t continue to whip until you form stiff peaks unless you’re confident enough and want it like that.

Does dalgona need sugar?

So our dalgona chocolate recipe doesn’t need sugar to become a pillowy fluffy cloud like traditional dalgona coffee which needs equal parts hot water, sugar and instant coffee powder to fluff up.

That’s because we’re using heavy cream here that whips up pretty awesomely even without sugar.

BUT sugar adds to the flavor here, especially if you’re using a super dark chocolate (that may be pretty bitter) or even unsweetened cocoa powder.

How can I make a less sweet version of dalgona
chocolate? What are some alternative sweeteners for dalgona chocolate?

To make a less sweet version of this dalgona chocolate recipe, you can add less sugar to bring in a touch of sweetness.

If you don’t prefer a sweet chocolate dalgona, you can go ahead and skip out on the sugar and use a super dark chocolate or unsweetened cocoa powder.

You can add more sugar and make this chocolate dalgona sweeter or cut down on the sugar completely if you want. It’s all your choice.

You can also use whatever sweetener you prefer. There are so many options.

Some alternative sweeteners for dalgona chocolate are cane sugar, brown sugar, honey, maple syrup or maybe even whatever are your favorite sugar-free or low sugar substitutes.

Should I mix dalgona before drinking?

It’s all up to you!

Two major ways you can have this dalgona chocolate recipe are:

  • By either topping it over some milk and slowly enjoying and sipping on it it as it gently mixes in with the milk or…
  • By topping it over the milk and then immediately mixing everything together to make a thick chocolate shake.

I personally prefer something right in the middle. I love topping the milk with that cloud of creamy chocolate, taking a few bites of it, using a straw to sip on it so I can get that milk and dollops of creamy chocolate mousse and finally, mixing everything together and turning it into a chocolate milkshake ❤!

What are the basic ingredients for a dalgona chocolate recipe?

This dalgona chocolate recipe literally uses only 3 ingredients. I mean, I can’t even imagine only 3 ingredients making something soooooooo good!

So yep, the basic ingredients to make this dalgona chocolate recipe are:

  • Dark chocolate
  • Heavy cream
  • Sugar

And then some milk to top your chocolate cream over, or you can go ahead and enjoy this fluffy chocolate mousse as it is!

Can I make dalgona chocolate without a hand mixer?

If you don’t have an electric handheld mixer, don’t worry.

There are many other ways you can whip this chocolate cream into a beautiful pillowy chocolate cloud of goodness.

You can use a stand mixer, an electric whisk, a blender, an immersion blender, even a manual hand whisk (it may take some time and lots of energy but your cream will whip!), maybe manually in a mason jar or perhaps even with a milk frother. You can experiment and see which method you prefer best.

How long does it take to whip the chocolate mixture for dalgona?

Using an electric hand mixer, it took me about 5 to 6 minutes to whip up the chocolate dalgona into soft peaks. You don’t need to wait for a long time at all when making this recipe.

What type of milk is best for a dalgona chocolate drink?

I prefer using some creamy fatty whole milk for my dalgona chocolate drink.

But hey, you can go ahead and top your chocolate dalgona over whatever milk you prefer! You can use skim milk, oat milk, almond milk, cashew milk, coconut milk, or a lactose-free milk that you prefer… Literally any milk you like!

Should I use hot or cold milk in my dalgona chocolate?

You can use hot or cold milk when having your dalgona chocolate.

It all comes down to your personal preference.

You can top this chocolate dalgona over some cold milk and add ice to the milk if you want it even colder. This is a perfect cold chocolate drink you can enjoy during summers and spring. Just sip on that cold creamy chocolate milk, so refreshing!

You can also ditch your regular hot chocolate mix and try something new by topping this chocolate dalgona over some hot milk. It’s a different twist on hot chocolate and an absolutely perfect cozy drink for fall and winter. You can also top your dalgona style hot chocolate with some marshmallow fluff, mini marshmallows, chocolate shavings or sprinkles… whatever you prefer and enjoy.

So yes, you can have your dalgona chocolate however you prefer, or try it with hot milk as well as cold milk and see what you like better ❤!

Are there any vegan options for making dalgona chocolate?

Oh yes, there are loads of vegan options when making dalgona chocolate.

To turn this into a delicious vegan dalgona chocolate recipe…

  • Use your favorite type of vegan chocolate. You can also use vegan cocoa powder.
  • Substitute heavy cream with canned fatty coconut milk and use the thick creamy layer of coconut milk on top. You can use coconut cream too. I’ve heard cashew cream is a pretty good substitute as well. I’ve seen aquafaba (liquid from a can of chickpeas) being used as well to make this a healthy dalgona recipe too. You can use any dairy-free cream you like and know is fatty and creamy to whip up well.
  • Sugar may not be vegan sometimes. That’s because it is usually refined in a process that involves bone char. To sweeten your delicious dalgona chocolate vegan recipe, you can experiment and see which sweetener you prefer. Each sweetener will add its own unique taste to your chocolate dalgona. You can try a type of vegan sugar you like, or maybe even coconut sugar… there are loads of wonderful options out there! You can also use maple syrup (make sure it’s 100% vegan) or maybe agave syrup. You can skip out on a sweetener too if the vegan chocolate you’re using is already lending sweetness to your vegan dalgona chocolate cloud.
  • When it comes to the milk, there are loads of plant-based dairy-free milk options out there you can use. You can serve your vegan dalgona chocolate with almond milk, coconut milk, oat milk, cashew milk, macademia milk… maybe even vanilla soy milk (ooh a vanilla dalgona chocolate recipe!). You can also use coconut milk and top it up with some delicious chocolate dalgona made using coconut cream. You can use any plant-based milk you know and love, let me know in the comments below what you prefer ❤.

What is the difference between dalgona chocolate and regular hot chocolate?

The main difference is dalgona chocolate is more fun 😉!

Haha I’m just kidding. Both dalgona chocolate and regular hot chocolate are fun and delicious in their own way.

The main difference though is that regular hot chocolate is usually made with hot chocolate powder, cacao powder, cocoa powder or some grated chocolate stirred into some warm milk until everything mixes together.

Dalgona chocolate on the other hand, is chocolate whipped with some heavy cream until it becomes a fluffy chocolate cloud. This chocolate cloud is then spooned over some milk, either hot or cold, and enjoyed.

Oh and hey, you can mix these two too! Go ahead and make some hot chocolate and then top it up with some dalgona chocolate and enjoy. Such chocolatey fun ☕.

Can I use cocoa powder instead of chocolate in this dalgona chocolate recipe?

Yes, you can use cocoa powder instead of chocolate when making this dalgona chocolate recipe.

If you’re making this recipe using unsweetened cocoa powder instead of dark chocolate, go ahead and add a tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder with all the other measurements staying the same.

If you’re using sweetened cocoa powder, go ahead and add as much sugar as you feel is necessary.

You can also use your favorite hot chocolate mix or maybe even Nesquick powder. Your homemade dalgona chocolate recipe will be delicious either way 💖.

  • And if you’re topping your chocolate dalgona over some hot milk, you can decorate it with some marshmallow fluff, mini marshmallows, chocolate shavings or sprinkles, brownie crumbs… whatever you prefer.
  • For a deliciously creamy milk drink, go ahead and froth the milk just a little and then top it up with this chocolate dalgona to have the most incredible fluffy cloud drink ever. It gives a warm look to the drink too. You can also add a sprinkle of cocoa powder on top or maybe even add a small block of your favorite chocolate. What tools/equipment do I need to make dalgona chocolate? How to make dalgona chocolate without a mixer and get it thick?

The main tool/equipment you need to make dalgona chocolate is an electric hand mixer with the beater or whisk attachments. An electric hand mixer makes it easy to whip your heavy cream and chocolate mixture for that perfect cloud of chocolate goodness.

If you don’t have an electric mixer though, don’t worry. There are many other ways you can whip this chocolate cream into a beautiful thick chocolate cloud.

You can use a stand mixer, a blender, an immersion blender, even a hand whisk (it may take some time and lots of energy but your cream will whip!), maybe manually in a mason jar or perhaps even with a milk frother.

You can experiment and see which method you prefer best.

The main things along with using either of these tools that’ll help you get thick dalgona chocolate are using a heavy cream that has at least 30% fat percentage and patience.

Whipping your cream, especially manually can and will take time. Just be patient and enjoy the process and you’ll get the creamiest chocolate cream ever 💖.

Why is my dalgona not fluffy? What are some common mistakes to avoid when making dalgona chocolate?

If you dalgona isn’t fluffy, there can be quite a few reasons why.

Here are a few common mistakes to avoid when making dalgona chocolate that may be the reason why your dalgona chocolate isn’t fluffy enough:

  • Are you using a cream that has a fat content of less than 30%? When making whipped cream, always use a cream that has a fat content of at least 30%. You can use heavy cream or heavy whipping cream (these contain 36% fat content). You can use whipping cream/light whipping cream as well that contains about 30% to 35% fat content. The higher fat content will make it easier to whip the cream.
  • Is your heavy cream fresh? Always make sure the heavy cream you’re using is fresh and hasn’t expired.
  • Maybe your heavy cream is warm? Or not cold enough. Always use cold heavy cream! It whips better. You can also keep your already cold heavy cream in the freezer for about 5 minutes before using it to make sure it’s extra cold. But make sure it doesn’t freeze!
  • Are you whipping frozen heavy cream? Please don’t freeze your heavy cream. Whipping frozen heavy cream may result in curdled cream.
  • To make things easier, you can keep the beaters/whisks and bowl you’ll be using in the freezer to make sure everything is extra cold. It makes whipping the cream super easy.
  • Another thing you can do to make whipping your cream easier is, placing the bowl you’ll be whipping your cream in over another bowl of iced water to make things even colder while whipping.
  • Are you using the right equipment? I suggest using an electric hand mixer with the beater or whisk attachments to whip your heavy cream and chocolate mixture for that perfect chocolate whipped cream.
  • But if you don’t have an electric mixer, don’t worry. There are many other ways you can whip this chocolate cream into a beautiful pillowy chocolate cloud of goodness. You can use a stand mixer, a blender, an immersion blender, even a hand whisk (it may take some time and lots of energy but your cream will whip!), maybe manually in a mason jar or perhaps even a milk frother. You can experiment and see which method you prefer best.
  • Are you whipping your heavy cream long enough? Please remember that you need to whip your heavy cream for a couple of minutes at least. It’s not an instant thing, so be patient with your heavy cream.
  • Or are you overwhipping your heavy cream? Keep a close watch on your heavy cream chocolate mixture and don’t overwhip it! Overwhipping the heavy cream mixture may curdle it, cause it to take a yellow hue and become butter! Always stop at that stage where your chocolate cream forms soft to medium peaks. Don’t continue to whip until you’re confident enough and know how to form stiff peaks and when to stop.
  • Are you burning your chocolate? Or not following the instructions I’ve givevn here exactly? Be super careful when melting your chocolate and follow the instructions I’ve given in the recipe to melt it so you get some smooth molten dark chocolate. Burnt chocolate becomes gritty and may make your heavy cream gritty too. Also, follow the instructions I’ve given here exactly so your molten chocolate and cream whip together without any issues at all ❤.

Are there any special techniques for melting chocolate before whipping it into dalgona chocolate?

I’m sure there are many techniques out there but to make things easier, we go ahead and heat our dark chocolate with a little heavy cream in the microwave for just about 10 to 15 seconds so the chocolate doesn’t burn easily.

We then mix the chocolate with that warm cream until it melts and mixes into delicious chocolate cream. We use the heat from the heavy cream to melt our chocolate.

To help your chocolate melt easily in the cream, you can chop it into small pieces.

You can also use the double boil method to melt your chocolate and gently add it into the heavy cream as you whip it. No matter how you’re choosing to melt your chocolate, be careful and make sure it doesn’t burn. Chocolate burns very easily.

Can you make dalgona chocolate ahead of time?

Oh yes, you can make dalgona chocolate ahead of time.

Just go ahead and make your chocolate dalgona, store it in an airtight container or cover the bowl you whipped it in with clingwrap and keep it in the refrigerator.

It’ll stay good for about a day or two so serve it quick.

Whenever you’re serving it, whip it up a little with your handheld mixer to fluff it up again.

How to store leftover dalgona chocolate?

When storing leftover dalgona chocolate, go ahead and store it in the refrigerator in the same bowl you whipped it in covered with clingwrap or just use an airtight container.

Do not store it with the milk or else it will dissolve in it.

But if your dalgona chocolate is topped over the milk already, just store it as it is in the refrigerator. It may take it a day or two to dissolve into the milk. It’ll still be delicious if it mixes in with the milk.

How long does dalgona stay fluffy?

How long your dalgona chocolate will stay fluffy will depend on a few things such as how much you whipped it (did it reach soft peaks, medium peaks or stiff peaks), the heavy cream you’ve used… etc.

Your chocolate dalgona may start softening/deflating in a few hours but don’t worry, you can always whip it up again to make it fluffy once more.

How long does dalgona chocolate stay good in the fridge?

Dalgona chocolate will stay good in the fridge for about one to two days after which it may deflate completely and dry out too.

( Note- Please keep in mind that I go into lots of detail in all my recipes so you get to know all the super important tips & tricks when it comes to making a particular recipe. I always want you to make the BEST of whatever you’re cooking ❤ )

Instructions

  • MELT THE CHOCOLATE
Take a small bowl and add in 40 gms dark chocolate and 1 tbsp heavy cream.
You can cut the chocolate into small pieces to make melting it easy.
Let’s get to melting that chocolate. To do this, we can use the microwave or double boil it.
    I’ve used my microwave here.
Go ahead and pop the small bowl into the microwave and let the cream and chocolate mixture heat for about 10 to 15 seconds.
Be careful not to overheat it.
After 10 to 15 seconds, take the bowl out.
Your cream will be pretty warm. Using a spoon or fork, gently mix that warm cream with the chocolate, melting the chocolate in the process.
If you feel the heavy cream isn’t warm enough, you can microwave it again in 5 second bursts but it most probably will be warm enough to melt the chocolate within 15 seconds of heating.
Give it a good mix until the chocolate melts and mixes in completely with the cream.
  • WHIP WHIP WHIPPP!
Add ¼ cup or 60 ml heavy cream and 1 tbsp sugar to a large bowl and start whipping it over medium speed using an electric hand mixer fit with the beater or whisk attachments.
Don’t worry if you don’t have an electric hand mixer.
There are so many other ways you can whip everything into a beautiful fluffy chocolate cloud of goodness.
You can use a stand mixer, a blender, an immersion blender, even a hand whisk (it may take some time and energy but your cream will whip!), maybe manually in a mason jar or perhaps even a milk frother. Go ahead, experiment and see which method you prefer best ❤.
So yes, once you see the cream mixture start to thicken up just a bit in about a minute or so, pour in the previously melted cream chocolate mixture and continue whipping until you reach soft peaks. Medium peaks are okay too.
This takes me about 5 to 6 minutes when I’m using the electric hand mixer.
(Note: The amount of time it’ll take for the heavy cream to whip up depends on loads of things such as the climate of the place you’re living in, the heavy cream you’re using, its fat percentage, the temperature of the heavy cream, the equipment you’re using to whip the heavy cream, the speed you’re whipping your heavy cream chocolate mixture at, how cold the bowl and equipment is… So yes, it doesn’t have to take the exact time my heavy cream takes to whip up ❤.)
Anyway, to know if you’ve reached the soft peaks stage, just raise your hand mixer with some of that chocolate cream. Your whipped chocolate dalgona cream should form peaks that curl down at the top.
It’s like the heavy cream is not a thick liquid anymore and is starting to fluff up and gain structure.
Just imagine a soft melty ice cream mountain with the tip of the mountain bending a little downwards or see the picture above for reference.
I prefer soft peaks but you can go ahead and whip your chocolate dalgona until it forms stiff peaks as well if you’re confident and know you won’t overwhip it.
Remember, it doesn’t need to be perfect so even if it’s just a little fluffy, it’s okay ❤, it’ll still be absolutely delicious.
    You’re almost done 😍!
  • TOP THE MILK & ENJOY!
Fill a glass or mug with ½ cup milk, cold or hot (this depends on whether you want to have hot chocolate or a cold milkshake).
Spoon all that fluffy chocolate dalgona over it and enjoy ❤.
How good does that taste, huh 😍?
I love eating a bit of my dalgona chocolate with a spoon, like ice cream! And then mixing the rest of it with the milk and enjoying some creamy chocolate milk.
How do you like having your chocolate dalgona? Let me know in the comments below. I'd love to hear all about it!

TIPS:
  • Please use a cream that has a fat content of at least 30%. You can use heavy cream or heavy whipping cream (these contain 36% fat content). You can also use whipping cream/light whipping cream that contains about 30% to 35% fat content. The higher fat content makes it easier it is to whip the cream.
  • Always use cold heavy cream! It just whips better. Pop your heavy cream in the freezer for about 10 minutes before using it to make sure it’s extra cold. Don’t freeze your heavy cream though! Whipping frozen heavy cream may result in curdled cream 😱.
  • This isn’t necessary unless your cream is getting difficult to whip but yes, as an extra measure, go ahead and keep the beaters and bowl you’ll be using in the freezer to make sure everything is extra cold. You can also place the bowl you’ll be whipping your cream in over another bowl of iced water too while whipping it to make things even colder. You can try this if your cream isn’t whipping.
  • I suggest using an electric hand mixer with the beater or whisk attachments to whip your heavy cream and chocolate mixture for that perfect chocolate whipped cream.
  • But if you don’t have an electric hand mixer, you can also use a stand mixer, a blender, an immersion blender, even a hand whisk (it may take some time and energy but your cream will whip!), maybe manually in a mason jar or perhaps even a milk frother. Experiment and see which method you prefer best.
  • Remember that you’ll need to whip your heavy cream for a couple of minutes at least before it starts fluffing up. Be patient with your heavy cream .
  • Don’t overwhip your heavy cream chocolate mixture! Overwhipping your heavy cream mixture may curdle it, causing it to turn yellowish and become butter! Stop at that stage when your chocolate cream forms soft to medium peaks. Don’t whip until you form stiff peaks unless you’re confident enough and want it that way.
  • Use a good quality bar of chocolate that you love. That’ll make things even more fun. I mean, imagine enjoying a fluffy chocolate mousse version of your favorite chocolate over some milk, yum!
  • Use a large bowl when you’re whipping your chocolate heavy cream mixture so everything doesn’t splatter all over the place.

VARIATIONS:
  • Don’t have chocolate at home? Go ahead and use your favorite hot chocolate powder mix, unsweetened cocoa powder or cacao powder… or even some Nesquick powder instead.
  • You can substitute the heavy cream with with canned coconut cream or any other heavy cream substitute you prefer. I’ve also heard of people using egg whites from raw eggs as well as aquafaba from a can of chickpeas instead of heavy cream. Please remember though that raw eggs are not safe to have unless they’ve been pasteurized so please make sure you use pasteurized eggs.
  • The more you make this recipe, the more you’ll understand how much sugar is enough for you. You can add more sugar and make this chocolate dalgona sweeter or cut down on the sugar completely if you want.
  • You can also use whatever sweetener you prefer such as powdered sugar, confectioners sugar, cane sugar, brown sugar, honey, maple syrup or maybe even whatever are your favorite sugar-free or low sugar substitutes. The sweetener you use will add its own flavor to your chocolate dalgona.
  • You can use whatever milk you like as well. You can go ahead and use skim milk, oat milk, almond milk, cashew milk, coconut milk, or lactose-free milk that you prefer.
  • You can also play around with the milk by adding a few drops of vanilla extract or maybe even make your milk sweet by pouring in some honey, sweetened condensed milk or maple syrup to it.
  • You can top this chocolate dalgona over some cold milk. You can also add ice to the milk and make some iced milk if you want it even colder. A perfect refreshing drink for summer and spring.
  • You can top this chocolate dalgona over some hot milk too for a different twist on hot chocolate. An absolutely perfect cozy drink for fall and winter.
  • You can use different flavored milk too such as chocolate milk (dalgona chocolate milk, yum!) or maybe even strawberry milk.
  • You can also top your regular hot chocolate with this chocolate dalgona for an absolute chocolate treat.
  • You can also top your favorite milk tea (try my Easy Homemade Japanese Royal Milk Tea Recipe) or whatever is your favorite drink with some dalgona chocolate and enjoy a delicious new flavor.
  • If you like coffee or know some coffee drinkers or want to try something new, you can make the original whipped coffee drink by whipping equal parts tablespoons of hot water, instant coffee granules or instant coffee powder and sugar. Then add in a tablespoon of cocoa powder to that fluffy coffee mixture, whip everything just a little more and make it a coffee chocolate cloud. Then gently spoon it over some hot or cold milk and enjoy.
  • Another thing you can do to turn this into a chocolate coffee drink is to make something like mocha latte by using coffee and topping your coffee with some dalgona chocolate. You can serve this dalgona latte hot or cold. This mocha dalgona coffee is a pretty delicious drink and the combination of coffee and chocolate is pretty incredible. Ah, chocolate dalgona coffee .
  • Go ahead and add a pinch of some warm spices to your dalgona chocolate too, such as maybe ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg and/or ground cloves for a seasonal touch of warmth.

I made my dalgona chocolate in two ways, one with unsweetened cocoa powder and one with dark chocolate. Gotta give a thumbs-up for the melted dark chocolate method, it worked better for me.

This dalgona chocolate recipe is a such a good take on the traditional dalgona coffee recipe. I always failed at fluffing up my dalgona but this time I amazed even myself, all thanks to your instructions… 😊 it was simple, super quick and easy to make. 5 stars for sure!
